Dare of the Month

Dare YouI did the 'Dare of the Month' in October - I turned off my Blackberry and took my wife out for the day - on a Friday - unheard of! I left the office in the capable hands of the office team. I'm pleased to report that not only did the business survive without me, but we also won a large contact (for consultancy services) and they took my idea for seminars for Management Consultants and started to make it happen. Watch this space for further developments. I think I'll go away again!

This Month's Dare - Actively create systems to reduce interruptions by limiting access especially from:

  • time wasters (i.e. unimportant things that should be delegated)
  • time consumers (that interrupt)
  • empowerment failures (where you have failed to delegate appropriately)

The Art of Refusal - Tim Ferris (The 4-hour Workweek) suggests you check email twice per day at 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm. (Never first thing in the morning because you should reserve your most important task for first thing in the day). He applies a similar rule to creating an answer phone message to deal with phone calls.

Create an email auto-responder that will train your staff, suppliers and clients to be more effective, stating that you will be looking at your emails (or phone messages) within 4 hours - offer signposts to other team members who can deal with the enquiry.
